About 1STEP

The internet is a vast ocean of information. There are SO many creators that deliver incredible content on the web - all for free! At 1STEP, it is our mission to help structure and curate that information into actionable steps for you to grow in ANY endeavor that you may be interested in.

1STEP is designed to be the go-to curation tool for communities. We want to encourage learning and growth in every skill, hobby, endeavor, or passion.

The Problem

For Communities

• Members don't stay active or engaged for very long.
• It is costly to spend time training up new members, especially when the leaders have already given "onboarding" training hundreds of times.
• Communities are interest driven, not driven by a desire for management/overhead (analytics, engagement, marketing). These tasks become burdensome to community leaders who just want to focus on their interest.
• New member efforts are often not recognized or recorded, leading to a rapid fall off of activity and low retention.

For Individuals

• There are incredible and free resources just waiting to be read/watched/learned, but I don't know how to find them.
• Once I've found a good creator or source of information, it is hard to figure out what order I should consume their content.
• I am trying to learn a new skill, but there are no indications that my daily efforts are making a difference.

The Solution

1STEP

1STEP is the online platform to help you grow in ANY skill. There are THOUSANDS of online learning platforms - but they use only one source of information for their content. This is where 1STEP shines.

On 1STEP, the best creators and resources are all curated into "paths", which break down which resources you should consume and the best order to do so. While progressing through these "paths", you earn XP, which is an indicator of how much skill you are gaining. You are also earning reputation and rank within the communities that set up the paths, leading to a stronger engagement therein. EVERY step in the right direction should be encouraged, which is what we do with XP; We reward the your effort, no matter how small.

you'll also earn XP in your desired skills and standing in your communities through attending "Events", which ar a way for a community to reward your effort to show up to a live event or occasion, either in person or online.

An Example Situation

I love YouTube. It has taught me INCREDIBLE lessons about anything I've been curious about. But trying to search through page after page of videos from a wide range of creators gets difficult. Which creators are the best for what I'm trying to learn? Should I just stick to one?

It's hard to know, especially when you're the one who's new! This highlights a large need: structure. With increasing probability, there are hundreds of Reddit posts, YouTube videos, Facebook Groups, Podcasts, and blog articles that exist on the internet for the EXACT interest that you have. What the internet doesn't offer is a curated list in which to view or consume them.

For example, let's assume I take up a new interest in woodworking. Which sites are the best resources? Which videos should I watch first? How can I (the newbie) know which details and skills I should learn about first? If I type in "Woodworking 101" into YouTube, I get over a million results. Which should I watch first? Which are the top go-to videos? Which are the ones that are "must watch"? Which creators can be trusted?

Furthermore, how can I progress along my journey to become a skilled woodworker? Should I just shoot in the dark at any "Woodworking 101" video every day?

By using 1STEP, you can quickly skip the hours and hours of useless searching and lost time by following a community path - a curated, ordered list of resources to read, watch, or listen to in order to build up your skill/knowledge from scratch.

Our Purpose

Our main priority is to help the individual grow. We do this by encouraging daily progress in the right direction, as well as assisting communities in helping their new and returning members get up to speed. Think of 1STEP like a toolbox for individuals and communities: We help you set up and grow your progress - whether if you are a single person trying to understand how cars work, or you are a community focused on teaching people about cars.

The Team

Brad Nelson

I'm a strong believer in individual growth. I believe that you can learn and grow in ANY skill (even if you don't think it's a skill). I am a current PhD Student and I'm learning how to learn everyday.

I've been involved in the starting and running of 6 clubs/communities, some on the university campus, and some off. One of my biggest challenges as a community leader was trying to incentivize attendance or engagement to club members who were unpaid, un-school-credited volunteers. You might think that their interest in the club should be enough to sustain their involvement, but I've found that people are generally very busy, which means that we tend to shape our schedules around the activities that give us the most reward, which is how I tried to shape 1STEP. I wanted to make a platform on which ANYONE could learn and use the incredible resources of the internet.

In my own experience, I learned how to develop code for websites, all without spending a dime. This was very heavily influenced by sites like YouTube and freeCodeCamp. From there I started to realize that you can learn ANYTHING online, it just depends on how long you can devote to learning it. 1STEP is my efforts at trying to streamline that learning process.
